Drywall Repair Before Painting: What Strongsville Homeowners Need to Know

Paint is not a filler. One of the most common mistakes we see in Strongsville homes is painting over drywall damage that should have been repaired first. The result is a paint job that looks bad immediately and gets worse over time. Here's what to look for and what to do about it.

Types of Drywall Damage and How to Handle Each

Nail Holes and Small Dings (Under 1/2 inch)

These are the most common and easiest to fix. A professional painter fills these with lightweight spackling compound, lets it dry, sands smooth, and primes before painting. This is included in a standard paint job — you don't need to do anything special.

Medium Holes (1/2 inch to 4 inches)

Door handle impacts, anchors that pulled out, and similar damage fall in this range. These require a mesh patch or California patch technique, joint compound, sanding, and priming. A skilled painter can make these invisible.

Large Holes (Over 4 inches)

Large holes require cutting out the damaged section and installing a new piece of drywall with backing. This is a more involved repair that adds time and cost to a paint job — but it's essential for a quality result.

Water Damage and Stains

Water stains are tricky. Painting over them with regular paint will not hide them — the stain will bleed through within weeks. Water-damaged areas require:

  1. Identifying and fixing the source of the water (critical — don't skip this)
  2. Allowing the area to dry completely
  3. Applying a stain-blocking primer (Zinsser BIN or Kilz)
  4. Then painting normally

If the drywall is soft, crumbling, or shows mold, it needs to be replaced — not just primed over.

Cracks

Hairline cracks are normal in older homes and can be filled with joint compound. Wider cracks (especially diagonal cracks near door and window corners) may indicate settling or structural movement and should be evaluated before painting.

Texture Matching: The Hardest Part

The most challenging aspect of drywall repair is matching the existing texture. Most Strongsville homes have one of these textures:

  • Orange peel — the most common; a light spray texture
  • Knockdown — flattened peaks, common in 1990s–2000s homes
  • Smooth — no texture, requires the most skill to match seamlessly
  • Popcorn / acoustic — common on ceilings in older homes

A professional painter has the tools and experience to match virtually any texture so repairs are invisible after painting.
